What Affects the Price of Flash Memory Products
Seven variables drive the price of a flash memory product: NAND die cost, capacity, controller, package format, housing and branding, packaging, and quantity. NAND die cost is the biggest and the least stable — it moves with the global memory market, which is why a quotation has a validity period rather than a standing price. Everything else is a configuration choice you control. The practical implication: a price quoted without a stated capacity, grade and controller is not a price, it is a placeholder.
The seven variables
| Variable | How much it moves the price | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| NAND die cost | The largest single component, and the most volatile | Market — but grade and source are your choice |
| Capacity | Roughly proportional, with step changes at die boundaries | You |
| Controller solution | Meaningful, and affects host compatibility | Selected with you |
| Die package format | TSOP, BGA, LGA, COB, eMMC — each priced differently | Constrained by capacity and mechanics |
| Housing and branding | Setup plus unit cost; a bespoke mould is the big one | You |
| Packaging | Bulk is cheapest; presentation packaging adds per-unit cost | You |
| Quantity | Unit cost falls with volume, with steps at tooling thresholds | You |
Why flash prices move
NAND is a commodity with a supply cycle. When demand from smartphones, PCs and data centres outruns fab output, die prices rise; when capacity comes online, they fall. Discontinuation of a package by a major supplier can also move the price of a specific configuration sharply. This is why flash quotations carry a validity period and why a quote from three months ago is not a benchmark.
What is not in the unit price unless you ask
- Tooling for a bespoke mould
- Artwork setup for printing
- Presentation packaging and accessories
- Freight and duties — determined by Incoterms and destination
- Third-party inspection, if you appoint one
How to compare two quotes honestly
Put them side by side on capacity, silicon grade and source, controller, packaging and Incoterms. If any of those differ, the prices are not comparable regardless of how close the numbers look. A quote that omits them is not cheaper — it is just less specified.
Send your requirement
We reply to business enquiries within 1 business day. If you are comparing suppliers, send the specification you were quoted — it makes the comparison meaningful.

Can you give me a price list?
A standing price list would be out of date before you used it. Send your specification and we will quote against it, with the validity period stated. See how pricing works.
Why did the price change from last time?
Almost always NAND die cost. We will tell you which variable moved and by how much rather than just sending a new number.
Is a bigger capacity always proportionally more expensive?
Not linearly. There are step changes at die boundaries where a different die or an additional die is required, so some capacities are better value than others at a given moment.
Does branding add much?
Printing and engraving are modest per unit. A bespoke mould carries tooling cost and is what changes the economics of a small order.
