Flash Memory for Action Cameras and Drones

In short

Action cameras and drones record at high bitrate, often in 4K, while moving, vibrating and exposed to the weather. The card has to sustain a high sequential write speed for the whole clip, not just peak on a bench test, and it has to survive shock and a wide temperature swing. WINTEL supplies microSD-class TF cards from 4GB to 256GB, with read and write speed specified per project so the speed class matches your recording bitrate rather than a retail label. For drone and action-camera OEMs, batch-to-batch consistency is what protects your brand at scale — the same card in unit 1 and unit 10,000. Send us your recording resolution, bitrate and target capacity and we will quote the matched configuration.

What this buyer actually cares about

Sustained high-speed write, not a peak number

A 4K clip writes at a near-constant high rate. A card that benchmarks fast on a short burst can still drop frames mid-clip once its cache is full. The number that matters is sustained sequential write under the actual bitrate.

Shock and vibration

On a drone or a mounted action cam the card is moving the entire time. A removable card in a slot can work loose over a long flight or a bumpy ride; a soldered UDP module removes that failure mode.

Temperature swing

Equipment flown outside or left in a car passes through a wide range in a single day. Standard commercial cards are not specified across the full range an outdoor device sees.

Consistency across the production batch

When the card ships inside your branded product, your warranty exposure is your customer’s experience. Mixed silicon inside one batch creates failures you cannot explain on a support call.

Knowing the actual grade

Capacity inflation and relabelled speed classes are a documented problem across the flash market. Component buyers need the real grade and source, not a marketing label.

What we do about it

  • Specify read and write speed per project against your recording bitrate
  • Supply TF cards from 4GB to 256GB for 1080p through 4K workloads
  • Source silicon from named suppliers — SanDisk, Toshiba, Micron, SK Hynix, Intel, Samsung
  • Match the controller solution to your host rather than reusing whatever is on the line
  • Offer UDP modules where the design cannot tolerate a loose removable card
  • Confirm capacity and read/write performance before packing

Recommended configuration

A starting point drawn from the workloads buyers in this scenario describe. We confirm the exact specification against your bitrate, host and target date rather than quoting a generic figure.

Common procurement risks

What buyers in this scenario most often get wrong — and how we address it.

  • Peak-benchmark speed that drops mid-clip once cache fills
  • A loose removable card on a vibrating drone or mounted cam
  • A commercial card not specified for an outdoor temperature swing
  • Mixed silicon across the OEM production batch

Buyer checklist

  • Confirm your workload (bitrate, retention window, duty cycle) before specifying capacity
  • Match the speed class to the actual workload, not a marketing number
  • Ask for the silicon source and grade in writing before you commit
  • Request a physical sample and approve it before bulk production
  • Confirm MOQ, lead time and Incoterms in the written quotation

Frequently asked questions

What speed class do I need for 4K recording?

The SD Association defines Video Speed Classes: V30 guarantees at least 30 MB/s and V60 at least 60 MB/s of sustained video write. 4K at a high bitrate needs V30 at minimum and often V60. Tell us your bitrate and we will match the silicon and controller to it rather than quoting a generic class.

Should an action camera use a removable card or soldered storage?

If the end user swaps the card, use a TF card. If the unit is sealed, or flies where a loose card would be lost, a UDP module soldered to the board is the safer design. Send the mechanical clearance and we will propose the matched option.

Can you supply cards specified for outdoor temperatures?

Tell us the operating temperature range your product must meet. We will tell you honestly whether the part we can supply is specified for that range, rather than implying a rating we cannot document.

How do I verify the real capacity of cards I receive?

Test them yourself rather than trusting the label. H2testw on Windows or f3write plus f3read on macOS and Linux write and read back the full capacity; a fake reports data lost past its real size. Our guide walks through the method.

What is the minimum order quantity for an OEM run?

MOQ depends on capacity, controller solution and whether customisation is involved. Send your specification and annual volume and we will confirm MOQ with the quotation.
