Flash Memory for Body-Worn Cameras and Wearable Recorders

In short

Body-worn cameras and wearable recorders write continuously in shifts, often clamped to a uniform or carried outdoors, so the card lives through heat, cold, drops and long duty cycles. The requirements are stable sustained write over a full shift, a storage medium that cannot be tampered with or lost, and batch consistency across a fleet order. WINTEL supplies microSD-class TF cards from 4GB to 256GB with read and write speed specified per project, and UDP modules where the recorder is sealed and the storage must not be removable. For multi-unit deployments the main requirement is that unit 1 and unit 10,000 behave the same. Send your bitrate, shift length and annual volume and we will quote the matched configuration.

What this buyer actually cares about

Sustained write across a full shift

A shift is hours of continuous recording with no idle time for the card to recover. Sustained write behaviour matters more than a benchmark peak.

Tamper and loss resistance

In evidentiary and security use the recording medium must not be removed or swapped without authorisation. A removable card can be; a soldered module cannot.

Temperature and drop exposure

Worn outdoors, the device sees heat, cold and shock that a desk device never does. The part has to be specified for that, not for an office.

Consistency across the fleet

A fleet order is judged by its worst unit. Mixed silicon inside one batch creates failures that are hard to trace and expensive to explain.

Capacity against the shift

Over-specifying capacity wastes budget; under-specifying loses the end of a shift. Sizing against the bitrate and shift length is a cost decision.

What we do about it

  • Supply microSD-class TF cards from 4GB to 256GB
  • Specify read and write speed per project against your bitrate
  • Supply UDP modules for sealed designs where storage must not be removable
  • Source silicon from named suppliers and confirm the grade in writing
  • Confirm capacity and performance before packing
  • Explain how the batch is sourced and checked for fleet orders

Recommended configuration

A starting point drawn from the workloads buyers in this scenario describe. We confirm the exact specification against your bitrate, host and target date rather than quoting a generic figure.

Common procurement risks

What buyers in this scenario most often get wrong — and how we address it.

  • Sustained write not met over a long shift
  • A removable card tampered with or lost
  • Heat / cold / drop exposure vs office-spec parts
  • Worst-unit failure across a fleet order

Buyer checklist

  • Confirm your workload (bitrate, retention window, duty cycle) before specifying capacity
  • Match the speed class to the actual workload, not a marketing number
  • Ask for the silicon source and grade in writing before you commit
  • Request a physical sample and approve it before bulk production
  • Confirm MOQ, lead time and Incoterms in the written quotation

Frequently asked questions

How much capacity covers a full shift?

Compressed body-cam audio and video runs roughly 30 MB to 90 MB per hour, so a 64 GB card holds in the region of 700 to 2,000 hours — far more than a single shift. Confirm your own bitrate first and size from there rather than guessing.

Should a body camera use a removable card or soldered storage?

If the unit is serviced and the card is swapped under procedure, use a TF card. If the recorder is sealed and the medium must not be removed, use a UDP module soldered onto the board. Send the mechanical clearance and we will propose the matched option.

Can you supply for a fleet or multi-unit deployment?

Yes. The main requirement is batch consistency, so let us know the deployment size and we will explain how the batch is sourced and checked before packing.

Do you supply parts specified for outdoor temperatures?

Tell us the operating range your device must meet. We will tell you honestly whether the part we can supply is specified for it, rather than implying a rating we cannot document.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on capacity and the configuration. Send your specification and annual volume and we will confirm MOQ with the quotation.
