What is the difference between OEM and ODM flash memory, and which do I need?
OEM means you supply the design and we build it; ODM means we supply a proven design that you brand and slightly adapt. For flash, the line is practical rather than legal: a USB drive made to your own mould, your own PCB and your own artwork is OEM; a drive built on our standard body with your print and your chosen capacity is closer to ODM. The choice decides how much engineering you own, how long tooling takes, and what stays reproducible across repeat batches. Buyers who already have a product spec want OEM; buyers who want a fast branded product without designing it want ODM.
Where the work sits
The split is about who holds the design responsibility:
| OEM | ODM | |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Yours | Ours, lightly adapted |
| Tooling | Your mould / PCB | Standard body, your print |
| Engineering ownership | You | Shared |
| Time to first sample | Longer | Shorter |
Which to choose
Choose OEM when the product is part of your own device or brand and the shape, PCB or controller must be yours.
Choose ODM when you want a reliable, branded drive quickly and the value is in the logo and capacity, not a novel mechanical design.
For UDP modules and semi-finished boards, most orders are OEM because the part is defined by your host, not by a catalogue.

Frequently asked questions
Can an ODM product still carry my brand?
Yes. ODM means we supply the base design; you apply your logo, colour and packaging. The difference from OEM is that you are not re-engineering the mechanical or electronic core.
Does ODM cost less than OEM?
Usually, because there is no new tooling to amortise. The saving is in setup time and tooling cost, not in the per-unit flash cost, which is still set by capacity and silicon.
